Laboratories

We run several independent test laboratories with expertise in the field of road engineering. Our scope of activities focuses on testing asphalt mixes and binders, soils, aggregates and both fresh and hardened concrete. We also perform inspection tests of road courses, including the subgrade, and measure the surface properties of concrete and asphalt pavements.

Services

Our three laboratories provide our clients with a complete portfolio of laboratory testing for aggregates, soils and embankments, base courses, concrete and concrete structures and, of course, asphalt mixes and emulsions. We also focus on other specialized tests for road construction works, such as analyses of reclaimed and recycled materials or longitudinal unevenness measurements.

PAH analysis

We analyse and test polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in asphalt mixes and recycled/reclaimed materials. Analyses are carried out using a modern gas chromatography–mass spectrometry instrument. Results of the analyses can be used to categorize asphalt mixes in a quantitative class according to Regulation No. 130/2009, stipulating the criteria when asphalt mixes are a by-product or are no longer considered waste.

AGGREGATE TESTING

We perform tests of aggregate properties for road courses.

  • Determination of particle density and water absorption (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 1097-6)
  • Determination of the water content by drying in a ventilated oven (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 1097-5)
  • Assessment of fine aggregate particles - sand equivalent test (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 933-8+A1)
  • Determination of particle size distribution - sieving method (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 933-1)
  • Determination of particle shape - shape index (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 933-4)
  • Assessment of fine aggregate particles - methylene blue test (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 933-9+A1)
  • Determination of aggregate crushing value and aggregate impact value using the Los Angeles abrasion test (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 1097-2, Article 5)
  • Tests for thermal and weathering properties of aggregates - Part 2: magnesium sulphate test (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 1367-2)
 

TESTING OF SOILS, EMBANKMENTS AND SOIL LAYERS

We perform assessments of soil suitability and classification of soil, and design solutions for soil improvement. We also perform tests of subgrade and subformation level bearing capacity.

  • Impact load test for road subgrade and base course with light dynamic plates (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN 73 6192, equipment group C)
  • Compaction control of engineering fills (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN 72 1006, Annexes A,B,D (Czech Technical Standard ČSN 73 6190))
  • Determination of unit weight of soil using a diaphragm displacement meter (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN 72 1010, Art. 35-44, method D1)
  • Determination of unit weight of soil using a core cutter (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN 72 1010, Art. 8-14, method A)
  • Determination of water content (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN ISO 17892-1)
  • Determination of compaction (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 13286-2, except for Art. 7.3 and 7.6)

TESTING OF ASPHALT MIXES FOR BASE COURSES

We perform ITT and control tests during the execution of construction works.

  • Determination of indirect tensile strength (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 13286-42)
  • Determination of compressive strength of hydraulically bound mixes (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 13286-41)
  • Determination of California Bearing ratio, immediate bearing index and linear swelling for unbound and hydraulically bound mixes (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN EN 13286-47)

 

 

TESTING OF CONCRETE AND CONCRETE STRUCTURES

We perform tests of fresh and hardened concrete including non-destructive testing of concrete structures using a Schmidt hammer.

We design mixes for binder, base and wearing courses and perform tests of asphalt pavements. We can also provide a complete analysis of asphalt mixes.

We verify properties of modified and unmodified bituminous binders.

INITIAL TYPE TESTING (ITT)

We design ITTs (initial type tests) for asphalt mixes in compliance with applicable Czech Technical Standards ČSN EN and method statements.

 

 

PULL-OUT RESISTANCE TESTING OF WATERPROOFING AND REPAIR SYSTEMS

We perform tests to determine the tensile strength of surface layers and material adhesion to the foundation layer in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN 73 6242, Annex B.

 

 

OTHER SPECIALIZED TESTING

  • Analysis of soil/RAP in compliance with Regulation No. 294/2005 Sb. (assessment of soil/RAP toxicity), including accredited sampling
  • Measuring and evaluation of skid resistance of road pavements (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN 73 6177)
  • Measurement and evaluation of pavement surface roughness including calculation according to international roughness index (in compliance with Czech Technical Standard ČSN 73 6175)
  • Testing of resistance of asphalt mixes to formation of frost cracks, evaluation of fatigue and measuring of complex modulus of rigidity
