Road Section in Wilson Street, Prague

17th August 2016

The road consists of three to five lanes, about 11-20-metre wide in total. The structure had a number of defects prior to repair: rutted tracks, transverse and longitudinal cracks, potholes, both pedestrian and vehicle underpass leakage, buckled and misaligned granite copings, clogged and often non-functional water pipes.

Construction was divided into four phases to accommodate downtown traffic and to coordinate with PPDS (gas line failure). The section from the Main Railway Station to Smetana Theatre - left and then the right side - and the section from Smetana Theatre to Wenceslas Square - right and then left side.

100 mm of asphalt layers were continuously milled off the road. Cracks in the base layer were further milled and reinforced with geogrid with fibreglass. The roadway structure was demolished down to the load-bearing reinforced concrete bridge structure at the underpass at the Main Railway Station and the underpass at the Smetana Theatre. The reinforced concrete structure was backfilled and then a sealing layer with new waterproofing including a protective layer of cast asphalt and plain concrete was applied. Granite curbs and street gutters were continuously repaired. At the end of each stage, two layers of modified asphalt (ACL 16S 60 mm and ACO 11S 40 mm) were laid and brand new horizontal traffic signs were installed.
