České Budějovice Bypass

27th June 2023

The South Tangent (road II/143) connects the existing I/3 road with the construction of the city section of the D3 motorway, the nearly three-kilometre-long link.

The Southern Tangent, the construction of which began in 2021, starts with a roundabout on the I/3 road near Planá, continues to the east through the edge of Včelná and connects with Roudná at an off-grade junction at the place where a new section of the D3 motorway is being built. From a civil engineering point of view, this was a demanding construction - with two roundabouts, a total of six bridges (three of which are railway bridges), 300 metres of noise barriers and footbridges for cyclists and pedestrians. Among the most interesting solutions is the six-lane "superintersection" between Včelná and Rožnov, over which there is a local cycle path, and the single-track line from České Budějovice to Český Krumlov.

A second stage of the South Tangent is being planned to be realised in the future. It is to be 5.5 kilometres long and will continue between Vidov and Plav in the direction of Heřman and Borovnice and then connect to the road to Trhové Sviny after Nová Ves. However, the full effect of both sections of the South Tangent will only be brought by the connection to the new sections of the D3 in the direction to south from České Budějovice. One of them, Úsilné - Hodějovice, is being built by COLAS CZ, a.s. in consortium with colleagues from M-Silnice and Hochtief. ŘSD (Road and Motorway Directorate) expects its completion by the end of 2024.
